In the small town of Pocahontas in Iowa, big changes are happening. The town is spearheading a technological revolution by replacing all of its 280 streetlamps with semiconductors that change electricity into light, better known as LEDs. The project to convert all the streetlamps from incandescent bulbs to LEDs cost $190,000 but the energy savings the town will make over the next four years will certainly pay the investment bill. City Administrator Robert Donahoo revealed, “The citizens love them”.
It is not just the streetlights that use LEDs in Pocahontas. Indeed, it seems the entire town has embraced the light emitting diode as opposed to the incandescent bulb. All across the town, high-pressure sodium lights, fluorescent tubes, and incandescent bulbs are being replaced with LEDs. The town’s traffic lights are all using LEDs and Audi has replaced its AG’s headlights with LEDs. Some residents are even replacing the backlighting of their television sets, phone screens, and computer screens with LEDs!
The change in lighting technology that is taking place so dramatically in Pocahontas is a widespread phenomenon that is taking place across the United States. Eric Bloom, a senior analyst in Pike Research, an organisation that specialises in smart building technologies, said of the movement: “LED’s are transforming the whole business model for lighting from one that’s based on replacement to one that’s based on installation”. As LED lighting can last for up to 30 years, Bloom said “getting in at the get-go is absolutely crucial for the lighting market of the future”.
The change from traditional lighting to LED lighting has provoked major patenting lawsuits across the world. Siemens AS’s Osram unit is currently battling the Korean electronics makers Samsung Electronic Co. and LG Electronics Inc. for patenting rights over LEDs. David Radulescu, a patent lawyer who hasa represented LED companies for more than a decade, said of the matter: “These are new markets, new products and a lot of money is on the line. Companies want to protect their investments and their market”.
Another major lawsuit concerning LED patenting rights is being waged by a unit of British broad-cast equipment maker Vitec Group called Litepanels Inc. Litepanels Inc. is responsible for lighting press briefing rooms at the Pentagon and the White House as has launched a lawsuit for rights over LEDs in order to keep Chinese competitors out of the US market.
